Letter to the editor DSE 5+

Dear Editor,

Re: Article “Schools Should Ban Smartphones” Published on 10th March

I am writing in response to your recent article advocating for a complete ban on smartphones in schools. While I understand the concerns about digital distractions, I believe that prohibiting smartphones entirely is not the solution. Instead, schools should focus on teaching responsible digital citizenship.

Firstly, smartphones are powerful educational tools when used appropriately. Many learning applications, such as language learning platforms and educational videos, can significantly enhance classroom learning. For instance, during my Biology lessons, our teacher often asks us to use our phones to access interactive 3D models of cells, which helps us understand complex concepts more effectively than traditional textbook diagrams. Moreover, students can quickly look up additional information, access online dictionaries, and use productivity apps to organize their assignments. Banning smartphones would deprive students of these valuable resources that have become integral to modern education.

Furthermore, in today’s digital age, learning to use technology responsibly is an essential life skill. Rather than shielding students from smartphones, schools should teach them self-discipline and time management. By implementing clear guidelines on when and how phones can be used—such as designated “phone-free zones” during exams or specific lessons—schools can help students develop healthy digital habits that will serve them well in university and future workplaces. This approach prepares students for real-world situations where they must balance technology use with productivity.

I acknowledge that excessive phone use can indeed be problematic, leading to reduced attention spans and social isolation. However, a blanket ban is an extreme measure that fails to address the root cause of the problem. The issue is not the device itself, but how it is used. Schools should instead focus on education and reasonable restrictions, working with parents to establish consistent expectations about technology use both at school and at home.

In conclusion, smartphones are neither inherently good nor bad—it is how we use them that matters. I urge educators and policymakers to adopt a balanced approach that leverages the benefits of technology while mitigating its drawbacks through education and guided practice. Let us prepare students for a digital future rather than trying to shield them from it entirely.

Yours faithfully,

Chan Tai Man

範例二:支持推行環保午餐政策

題目情境:你讀到一篇關於「學校應該推行環保午餐政策」的文章,你同意這個觀點。

Dear Editor,

Re: Editorial “Green Lunch Initiatives in Schools” Published on 18th April

I am writing to express my wholehearted support for your editorial advocating for environmental-friendly lunch policies in schools. As a secondary school student deeply concerned about our planet’s future, I believe such initiatives are not only necessary but urgently needed.

The environmental impact of single-use plastics in school cafeterias is staggering. According to recent statistics from environmental organizations, Hong Kong schools generate approximately 150 tonnes of lunchtime waste daily, with a significant portion being non-biodegradable plastic containers and utensils. By switching to reusable containers and implementing proper recycling systems, schools can dramatically reduce their carbon footprint. This is not merely an idealistic goal but a practical necessity given the escalating climate crisis.

Beyond the environmental benefits, green lunch policies serve an invaluable educational purpose. When schools adopt sustainable practices, they demonstrate environmental responsibility through action rather than just words. Students learn by example that individual choices matter and that collective action can create meaningful change. In my school, after we introduced a “bring your own container” initiative, I witnessed a remarkable transformation in students’ attitudes. Many of my classmates who previously showed little interest in environmental issues began actively participating in recycling programs and discussing ways to reduce waste at home.

Critics may argue that such policies create inconvenience or additional costs for schools. However, these concerns are outweighed by the long-term benefits. Initial investments in reusable containers and proper waste management systems may seem expensive, but they ultimately reduce ongoing waste disposal costs. Moreover, the educational value of instilling environmental consciousness in young people is immeasurable. We are raising a generation that will face unprecedented environmental challenges; equipping them with sustainable habits now is an investment in our collective future.

In conclusion, implementing green lunch policies in schools is a crucial step toward building a sustainable society. I urge school administrators and the Education Bureau to prioritize these initiatives and provide necessary support for their implementation. Our planet cannot wait, and our schools should lead the way in demonstrating environmental stewardship. Let us ensure that future generations inherit a healthier, cleaner world.

Yours sincerely,

Wong Mei Ling
